A Fernand Martin (France) clockwork automaton,Fernand Martin, Le Petit Cuisinier, France 1904, 20 cm, UW ok, Martin toys are portraying French life in the 19th century. They are crude in one way and sophisticated in another. Martin''''s genius was to observe everyday people and transform them into toys. Many times toys are made for children but with adults in mind. The subtleties would be lost on a child. This is an early toy figure of a cook, with painted face, with permanent key, black metal feet. Dressed in a cooks dress When wind up, he chops the carrot with great effort. He has survived remarkable well. See F.Marchand''Historie des Jouets Martin,Paris 1987.

This Lehmann "Ajax" toy was Patented 1903, this one ca 1914. The most articulated of all the Lehmann toys which uses a very complicated mechanism. It shows a warrior with clubs standing on long slats turning a somersault while fully extending. These came with two different kind of clothing and were expensive toys at the time. This one is the striped clothing version. Stands 10" ( 25 cm). Wind up, all original clothing and working fine.( Patent EPL 659) Very good condition. Some minor schratces due to age.
