A rare and exceptionally well-preserved early papier-mâché doll, known as a Milliner’s Model, made in Germany circa 1830. The doll comes from the former Mary Merritt Doll Museum and has been protected for decades in her original glass-fronted wooden display case. She has a papier-mâché shoulder head, black moulded and painted hair with exposed ears, long finely painted curls and a high topknot. Her delicately painted features include blue eyes. The slender body is made of kid leather, with wooden arms and legs and painted shoes. Her antique clothing is original and includes a green silk blouse, a long cream-coloured skirt and fine undergarments. She wears a small bracelet on one arm. An outstanding doll of museum quality, preserved in very fine condition. Height 36 cm (14 in).

A fine and rare mechanical tin toy by Lehmann of Brandenburg, patented in 1927. The large black-and-white, hand-painted cat chases the small mouse, which is attached to a rod. The clockwork mechanism winds up and works perfectly. The toy is preserved in exceptionally fine condition. Length including the mouse: 28 cm (11 in). A rare and charming mechanical celluloid Lion Teaser, made in Occupied Japan, circa 1947–1952. The monkey dangles a bone above the lion to tease it. When wound, the lion moves and opens its mouth to grab the bone, while the monkey raises it out of reach. Length approximately 20 cm, height 13 cm and width 5 cm. Embossed “PATENT PENDING” and “MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN” on the lion’s left rear thigh. Complete with the rare original illustrated box. Rare mechanical white dancing bear by Fernand Martin, Paris, circa 1909. An evocative glimpse of Parisian street life from the early 20th century. Martin produced the model in both brown and white versions; the white example is considerably more rarely seen. The bear has a chain around its muzzle and carries a pole across its shoulders. The winding key is positioned at the side, and the clockwork mechanism functions well. When wound, the bear dances animatedly from side to side. The bear is in very good condition and bears the Fernand Martin mark beneath the foot. A rare and characterful collector’s piece from the celebrated Parisian toy maker.
